Background
Carla Kleverlaan started playing beach volleyball at 26 years of age after having what she terms a quarter life crisis. She was inspired by Australia's Cook and Pottharst winning the Sydney Olympic Beach volleyball Gold Medal and wanting to follow her childhood dream of competing at the elite level.
Having completed 5 years of intense study to become an Osteopath and then a Graduate Diploma in Exercise and Sports science she had the knowledge, experience and body experience to be successful.
On starting beach volleyball, Carla quickly moved up the ranks and after playing for only 18th months she moved Queensland (Australia) to train with Gold Medal coach Steve Anderson. This started a 15 year journey as an athlete to win many state titles and travel internationally.
In 2008 after being at the peak of her fitness and skills she was diagnosed with Ovarian Cysts, one the size of a grapefruit (13cm). Her fighting spirit inspired her to treat the cysts naturally and she took two years off beach volleyball to focus more on maximizing her health and healing. After trying almost everything imaginable the cyst doubled in size and she had to undergo a major operation to remove the almost 5kg cyst. Carla underwent months of healing and rehabilitation to again travelled and compete on the World Tour and her and playing partner were ranked in the top 100 in the world.
Carla has a motto that she believes that if you have a dream and you focus and work hard towards it then you maximize your chances of achieving that dream. She believes that age is no obstacle to staying fit and healthy. Her positive mindset and the skills she has learnt along the journey have created a very knowledgeable practitioner in many facets of health and wellness.
Just over one year later she published her first book, Back, Body and Soul – The Doctor Kleverlaan Way. It is a holistic guide to wellness that is easy to read with many interesting and relatable stories to engage readers. Carla now lectures at Victoria University helping students wanting to be Osteopaths and works in private practice in Melbourne, Australia.
Carla believes being health you can achieve so much more in life and feel great at the same time. She has developed several programs to facilitate your health and healing through her journey and learnings. If you want to learn more look at the online programs page (live in June 2014).
